Ultrasound and X-ray for Pets

Your pet may be in pain or discomfort but is unable to let you know exactly what it is that is bothering them. They may also have a health condition that cannot be detected by visual exams. This is when diagnostics like ultrasounds and X-rays come into play. They help us retrieve and analyze key information about your pet’s health. What is an ultrasound? What is an X-ray?

They are both means of literally looking inside your pet. Your pet’s vet will typically call for an ultrasound to examine your pet’s heart, lungs and other soft-tissue organs to see how they are functioning. If your pet is pregnant or has a tumour an ultrasound may also be administered. X-rays will be ordered for bones, ligaments and other hard parts of the body. They are even used to look at things your pet may have accidentally swallowed.

Are ultrasounds and X-rays safe for pets?

Definitely. Ultrasounds are radiation-free. During an X-ray, we make sure patients are protected with vests and sunglasses against the very small amount of radiation that is emitted.

Do pets need to be sedated during ultrasounds and X-rays?

It depends. If your pet is especially calm and the area to be examined is at an easy-to-reach area, sedation may not be needed. If your pet is easily stressed by manual restraint or if we would have to place them in an awkward position to scan the area, it is better that they are asleep during their scan.
